Inspired by winemaking friends both in San Diego and Italy, Alfredo began planting his favorite varietals throughout 2006 to 2008 and made his first Aglianico in 2009.
Since then, various friends who’s families had been making wines for generations (unlike ours) have shared their knowledge, expertise, and traditional methodology resulting in the award winning products you taste today.
The winery remains in the family but is operated by Alfredo’s sons, Alessandro and Silvio Gallone to continue on the legacy.
Much like any Italian legacy, it begins with the family patriarch: Alfredo Gallone. Born in Naples, Italy, Alfredo immigrated to the United States in the early 1980’s and became an entrepreneur in the real estate market. After many years investing, Alfredo acquired the property in 2005 dreaming of a retirement paradise away from work where he could cultivate his plants and drive his tractor.
The winery name Principe di Tricase translates to Prince of Tricase, a town in Puglia on the heel of Italy’s boot.
In the 1400’s, the Gallone family defended the Italian coastline from invasion and were granted the noble title of Prince (similar to a knighthood or lordship). Since then, our line of Gallone moved to Napoli in the Campania region, where most of our culture, heritage, and grape varieties come from.
